The 4-1-4-1 formation is a relatively recent development and is based on the 4-3-3 or the 4-2-3-1. It is a defensive-minded soccer alignment, blocking the middle of the field while offering defensive match-ups against many formations. It has four backs, a holding midfielder, four midfielders and is completed by a single striker. This formation puts a massive load on the solitary striker.
